PCSX2 Tutorial

Around PCSX2

PCSX2 was the first PlayStation 2 emulator. Through persistent development, it’s remained the best one around! Game compatibility is high. It conveniently comes armed with its plug-ins, which can be customized. PCSX2 needs a fast computer in order to run well. You may have trouble using it if you’re utilizing a budget notebook or a Windows tablet.

With different emulators you can get away with using your keyboard for gameplay. However, with PCSX2 it is pretty difficult, provided the PlayStation 2 control’s miniature joysticks. I strongly advise buying a gamepad for this emulator.

Do not download PCSX2 out of their site

The downloading of PCSX2 in the official homepage has not been updated lately. Rather, you’ll come across the most latest releases of this emulator from this’automatic assembles’ page.

Intro to plug ins system

PlayStation 2 emulation revolves round the plug-in system. The same system employed by PlayStation 1 and N64 emulators. PlayStation emulators are merely the shell of this operation.

PCSX2 already comes outfitted with plug-ins, so you don’t have to worry about downloading them separately and configuring them manually. I still want to review different kinds of plug-ins along with you. It is fantastic to be educated with the way the emulator works. Here’s the list of them:

This controls the images and 3D rendering. This controls the way you control your matches; whether you use a keyboard or a gamepad. This controls the music and audio effects.

  • CDVD – the CD/DVD plug-in. This controls the scanning of your CDs/DVDs or images.
  • USB – the USB plug in. This controls USB emulation.
  • DEV9 – that the hard disk & Ethernet plug-in.
  • Note you don’t have to stick with the plug-ins which come with PCSX2. You might find better ones on the market if you Google around.

    The BIOS

The PlayStation 2 BIOS is needed to be able to boot games. This is a separate download after you have downloaded PCSX2. Below you can download this particular BIOS.

When conserving, rename the”_ip” file extension to”zip”. If you do not see the file extension, try showing them.

Continue reading below for what to do after you get into the BIOS.

Newer versions of PCSX2 are only standalone apps in a zip file. Older models of PCSX2 install using a wizard. I’ll explain both scenarios.

Installing the standalone program (newer versions)

Setup is simple: simply extract PCSX2 out of its zip file.

IMPORTANT! PCSX2 has to be put in a common folder on your own PC. I suggest Records , Downloads, or create a folder on your desktop. If you place PCSX2 someplace else on your main C drive, then you might be limiting it to read-only access. Doing this prevents PCSX2 from storing anything.

First Time Configuration + BIOS installation

    1. Open PCSX2 by double-clicking on. If you installed PCSX2 having an install wizard, you’d start it by going to your Start menu (your programs list) and open up PCSX2 there.
    2. PCSX2 welcomes you the very first Time Configuration screen. Click Next.
    3. The following screen only reviews the plug-ins which arrive with PCSX2. You don’t have to do anything here. Click Next.
    4. Next is your BIOS display. Just click Open from Explorer, as shown below:You’ll be prompted with a”This path doesn’t exist. Create it? Click Generate.
    5. Notice the path where the BIOS folder is situated. Open that folder up. Download the BIOS in case you have not already, unzip it, and drag its contents into your BIOS folder. It should appear something similar to below:

    6. It’s very important which you match the preceding screenshot on your end. Do not place the BIOS files at a sub folder within the BIOS folder!
    7. You should now see the Europe, Japan, and USA BIOS files appear in the white box.

    8. Click on your desired country to select it. Click Finish.
    9. That is it! PCSX2 is now fully configured and installed.
    10. Setting up the computer keyboard or gamepad
    11. Usually emulators have all of the keyboard keys preconfigured, but PCSX2’s keys are a blank slate the very first time you open it! You don’t have any option except to configure them. Again, I recommend you to buy a gamepad since the PlayStation 2 controller features lots of buttons. Using only the keyboard is an annoying experience.
